Spend time on day one introducing soil to the students. Talk briefly about what soil is, why soil is important, and the different types of soil. All information on this can be found under day one activities for the students. After you are done talking about soil, have students go to the web-site and have them click on day one. There the students will read in more depth about soil. After the students are done reading about soil, hand out small portions of soil in a plastic cup. If you can, try to obtain different types of soil so that there is a variety among the students. Students will then use their soil sample to fill out the questions displayed on the web-site. It may be easier to have the students write down the answers on their own paper. One of the questions first instructs the student to add water to their sample so that they can evaluate the absorption rate of the soil. You can either have students mark the water levels inside the plastic cup with a permanent marker or just have students make a hypothesis as to how much water was absorbed.
